Call of Duty Black Ops PC Tweak Guide

Right now the multiplayer is pretty choppy due to bad netcode and poor optimization. So most of the performance problems are on TREYARCH to fix. They do this by patching the servers and eventually the game clients so expect server restarts in the next couple days. There are still things you can do to get the most out of your machine and the game. It is also not using your CPU's and Graphics cards to the fullest. This was a common problem when COD World at War also by Treyarch was released.

Steam Issues

his is for SP:

1. For Single Player you can Play in offline Mode.

These are for the MP:

2. Disable Steam Cloud sync:

Right click on Black Ops Multi in steam games
Go Properties -> Updates -> Untick Enable steam cloud sync.

3. Disable Ingame Steam:

Steam > Settings > In Game > uncheck “Enable Steam Community In-Game”

You can also shut down Steam after you launch Black Ops


4. Lower the CPU Priority on Steam process:

open your Task Manager
click the "processes" tab - then click "steam.exe"
go down to "set priority" and set to "low". (see screenshot below)


Performance Tweaks

First of all turn your settings down and disable shadows and anti aliasing (or try aa x2)

turn vsync off

Shadows especially can affect performance.

Most COD4 configs and console commands are active in Black Ops


Config Files(SEE mp CONFIG File)

it is located in your game folder under your game profile name

Here are some Config files already preconfigured- you have to reset your binds and resolution

config.cfg->
config_mp.cfg->

Paste them in (create backups if it doesn't work for you)..

First of all, I made a small tool to help you out. It's simply a config editor. You can make changes to the config yourself, or you can use this tool to do it for you.

You can download the Config Editor tool here. -(has been check by me and no malware-admin)


Anyway, some settings that may be of importance are:

r_multiGpu

This should only be enabled if you have multiple graphics cards or a graphics card with multiple GPUs. If you don't have multiple GPUs, don't know what this means, or are having issues with your MultiGPU solution, please set this to "0".

r_multithreaded_device

This setting should be enabled for EVERYBODY as the minimum requirements for Black Ops clearly states that you need a multithreaded (multicore) CPU to run the game. However, some people have noticed that by setting this to "0" some of the skipping lag is relieved. Test this out only as a last resort.

r_vsync

VSync prevents screen tearing. If you don't know what that is, just set it to "0" because you probably don't care anyway. Otherwise, VSync usually doesn't have any negative performance issues with today's graphics cards. However, there may be a few performance issues linked to VSync with the current release of Black Ops. Try setting this to "0" for compatibility.

r_blur_allowed

This setting enables Blur shader effects. If you have a strong shader card, this setting may be negligible. Otherwise, just go ahead and set this to "0".

r_distortion

This setting enables Distortion shader effects. If you have a strong shader card, this setting may be negligible. Otherwise, just go ahead and set this to "0".

r_dof_enable

This setting enables Depth of Field shader effects. If you have a strong shader card, this setting may be negligible. Otherwise, just go ahead and set this to "0".

r_glow_allowed

This setting enables Glow (HDR?) shader effects. Normally, this should have a negligible performance impact. HOWEVER, this setting seems to be buggy! Performance improved DRAMATICALLY when I set this option to "0".

rate

Rate is the rate at which the client sends packets to the server. If you set this too low, below 10000 or so, you run the risk of sending insufficient data to the server and lagging out. Set this too high, above 50000 or so, and you run the risk of flooding your connection to the server. This setting should be adjusted according to your connection speed and may take some fine tuning.

cl_maxpackets

This setting controls how many packets the client will hold to ensure packet transmission. If you set this setting to low, below 20 or so, then you run the risk of being disconnected prematurely. If you set this setting too high, then you run the risk of continually resending redundant data and lowering your ping (or worse, getting choked). This setting is very hard to tune because it depends on so many factors beyond your own connection. Most people put this at half their max fps because that is the sweet spot for food hit registry. The log files are showing a lot of dropped packets so until they fix this mess 100 is your best bet.

Helpful Console Commands

/cl_maxpackets-improve net play set to 100 or half your max fps

/cg_drawfps - see fps in game

/com_maxfps 1-1000 (best ive got so far is just over 110)Should set to 125 or 250

/cg_Fov adjust your field of view - max=80 This can also be done via slider bar in graphics options it the options menu

/stoprecord -helps some people with stutter other people (like me) it did nothing. Doesn't hurt anything

/snaps 30 - an old cod 4 favorite


How To's



How to Join a Server by IP

There is a console command for addfavourite but it does not seem to work. So currently there is no way to join by IP

*Update** Devs will be putting in /connect so people can connect by IP soon (admin)

How to Find your Clan Server and how to Join Friends using Invites

there are no console server commands in Black Ops and no way to connect to an IP and many servers aren't showing up.

You can currently only add favorites thru the server browser

Recents do not work nor does invites

(1) In order to play with your friends you must hit then friends , find your friends and invite them

(2) The receiver has to go to the main menu bottom right there is a box called friends. Make sure you click on the tab that says Friend Invites or you will crash Then accept invite and you can join the game. also click on the name and click accept invite at the bottom. you may crash if you just double click on the name.

Lets hope they improve this soon

**update** You can know see the servers your friends are on and add those to your favorites. That makes it better.

Find more Servers

If you clear all filters and have good internet you should be able to see over 9000 servers

General Performance Tweaks

Disable all your startup Programs and Services

Port Forwarding

Black Ops PC uses the following ports TCP [3074] UDP [3074] - make sure they are open

You can go to Task Manager and manually heighten the priority to force it to use more CPU See Picture

See How your Graphics Video Card Stacks UP

Make sure you have the latest video and sound driver

If you have an ATI Card make sure you have the latest Catalyst Hotfix

You can also try disabling catalyst AI




Troubleshooting



I get crashes to desktop or a black screen

Try Running direct X again -\steam\steamapps\common\call of duty black ops\Redist\DirectX\dxsetup.exe

Also try running your game in the same resolution as your desktop

doubt ide play enough to bother, just not worth the effort

well to be honest in enjoying it more now because we have barebones options so I take out all the crap.

no kill streaks no noob perks ie clays making it so much more enjoyable.

no more clays in every doorway no more camping kill streak hunters just guns and what ever skill you got.

and the sky don't go dark anymore with some kind of chopper ive seen like 10 up there at one time all gone


by the way if you do have a game and want to pop in and have a look and its full just give me a shout on steam and ill make some space for ya.

problem i had with your server is i hated sabotage and capture the flag total borefest

if I give you free beer hot pies and set it just the way you wanted it I dear say you would have something to moan about mate.

on a better note I can't stand Team Death Match its pointless just running round in circles for how ever long the map runs with all the other game types you have something to do get a flag arm a bomb defend a flag defend a bomb take positions.

I agree with u Rage. But HQ is in my eyes the best mix of TDM and tactic. And if these Treyard fuckers would patch the spawnpoint system this game could make really fun.

Yes! The most annoying part of the game may being getting spawned only to die with in 0.000001 seconds because of some stupid guy in a chopper doesnt stop firing a mini gun in the one spot everyone is spawning!

I would put TDM and HQ as my top two game modes, then maybe sabotage or demolition.

I agree apart from the tdm.

the spawning has been the same in all the games of the past 4-5 years maybe 3-4 years ill miss out the 5 just incase Kryten don't like that number.

and i think the choppers are in the air far to long giving a unfais advantage to the killstreak campers or even the slighty better skilled players.

it is so much better with all the bullshit out the game ive noticed less moaning and whining people seem to just get on with the job in hand.

put it this way with server admin tools it has already made the game 100 times better than mw2 with the last update come the barebones option in the admin tools so im hoping in a short time more control will come because in barebones it takes out perks to and sight ect im ok with it but some like their reds so to have this barebones and just remove killstreaks would be good and maybe get rid of the clays from every door .

A big fault of Black ops over MW2 is probably that the ghost perk that replaced cold blooded only blanks you of the radar, and not from showing up to enemy air assaults such as the copter gunners. Clays aren't to big of an issue for me seeing as i've found a majority of the perks are shit i use the hacker one and it shows where the enemies clays are through walls etc, pretty handy. That could work for you raggy boy?

But i do agree the copter that you use the mini gun on is probably the most of place kill streak reward, I think its probably the most effective at killing the enemy and comes way earlier than rewards such as piloting and shooting with a copter at the same time, which is much harder and tends to end up being a sitting target for rockets! The spawn points are very frustration at times too when your on the receiving end! I can;t sat I found that to be a problem until this cod.

im not not sure it very polite to call the co-leader of the tce squad a twat or very grown up to be honest.

its a shame to get upset over a game thats clearly far better than COD, especially if you take into consideration wen the 2 games were made.

sabotage isnt a bad game type its just not a public server gametype, for me its a match game type for small squad of players.
