This is what i came up with.. im sure Russian, Kryten, Evil and Vas will have some other ideas though.
you said you had about a thousand to spend.. i think i got pretter close to that figure although i haven't included an operating software in that cost.

Yep , AMD Sux atm !!
1. Go for an Intel 8400 -> very cheap and powerfull (
2. Theres No need for a DVD Rom
3. Not sure with the ATI 3870X2 (its sux especially in DX 10 games, its slower than everything else, to expensive , needs to much power and its to loud)
1. 1 U need only DDR2 800 for the Intel CPU's if u don want to overclock like hell !
1.2 U need another mobo
The rest is fine carmen |

preferance's differ.. i think: Intel C2D 8400 is a rip off
that better.. waiting for the Nvidia 9800 might be worth it though?

plus 4 GB of RAm is unnessesary - xp and vista ( 32bit ) can only adress 2 GB
at a moment - i have 4GB but in real its only 3,25 GB - so wasted money...
64 bit edition can adress 4 GB plus there are some workarounds for 32bit but
complicated... |

and ye may aswell buy a dvdrw than a dvdrom
getting a 8800gt would save sum money then get a better card later on, dunno how good these new cards will be |
